Miss the deadline, face the fine!
In January 2015, HM Revenue & Customs noted there were 890,000 individuals who missed the deadline and subsequently received a £100 late fee. This indicated that almost 10% of all Personal Tax Returns were filed late.
HMRC issue many fines to those who miss the deadline and continually fail to submit their paperwork. This begins with a fee of £100 and can rapidly increase up to £1,600.
In addition to the initial £100 late fee, these further fines could follow:
- after three months, a daily fine of £10 per day, up to a maximum of £900
- after six months, a further penalty of 5% of the tax due or £300, whichever is greater
- after 12 months, another 5% or £300 fine, whichever is greater
The battle of the sexes
HMRC carried out analysis which shows women are more likely than men to fill in their Personal Tax Return on time.
For every 10,000 Personal Tax Returns submitted, 394 were filed late by men compared to 358 late returns by women.
Furthermore, it was noted that the younger generation filed more late tax returns compared to older individuals. 1,085 in every 10,000 Personal Tax Returns submitted from the 18-20 age bracket missed the deadline. In contrast, only 155 out of every 10,000 of the over 65 age bracket failed to complete by the deadline.
The IT and communications were the highest late filing industries with 390 people missing the deadline out of every 10,000 completed.
